The Process of Commissioning a Portrait

                Sittings
Before any sessions begin I like to meet my sitter to discuss ideas about the intention of the portrait, where it will hang, the size and mood, clothing, the background or setting and where and when the other sittings will take place.

For an adult charcoal head and shoulders 2-4 sittings are required, depending on the level of finish desired.  For a painted head and shoulders about 5 sittings are required.  A sitting lasts roughly two hours with regular breaks. This length of time for sittings is very important for capturing depth and true character and life of the sitter.

For young children some preliminary sketches will be drawn and photography will be used as a reference.   Ideally I like to draw children as a single portrait rather than in a group situation as each child has there own personality and identity and this comes across stronger in single portraits.

I work from home and the sittings are very informal and relaxed while I get a feeling for the sitter's personality and capture natural gestures and expressions.  My work is freely drawn and very impressionistic with a strong emphasis on light and dark using the 'Chiaroscuro' method.
